Kevin Williams

A Trucker in Wales

Kevin Williams lives in a small town in North Wales called Caerwys (pronounced CARE-WISS). His place of work is only 3 miles away in Lloc (pronounced CLOCK). His work takes him anywhere in the UK, but is mainly in and around North Wales including the Northwest of England.

Kevin is English but his father was a Welshman from these parts. Having lived here since 1998, Kevin was driving tankers up till 2005. Hauling such products as general chemicals, lube oils, fuels, dry bulk and assorted edible products. A great wealth of tank experience, but then it is not the job it used to be. The good times have all but disappeared and things are not as they were.

Kevin has given up the tanker business hauling all over Great Britain, for a low loader (float) and tipper (dump trailer) closer to home.

With so many changes and downsides to the industry the long haul is becoming to expensive for the trucker. Working a close radius to home has it's preferred benefits, financially as well as family life.

These truck and trailer photos are of Kevin's present work in Wales. The terrain photos are of the rolling hills of Wales as well as the Conwy Castle. The castle itself lies on the coast in North Wales overlooking the estuary and out into the Irish Sea.

(Top photos) are views from the cab as he crossed the Menai Straits onto the Isle Anglesey here in North Wales. The 2 views from along the bridge show a house on an Island in the middle of the straits. Kevin passes the Llanddulas Castle almost on a daily basis. There are a great many more such castles spread throughout Wales.

Photos below are in random order. (Bottom right) tipper is a customers truck being delivered to an auction. The traffic infested Motorway (Centre right) is the M6 at Birmingham. Top left photo in below section  is an articulated 30 tonne Terex dumper picked up in Widnes and delivered to the city of Chester.

THE RED DRAGON OF WALES

The red Dragon was introduced to Britain during Roman times. It is possible that the Romans learned of the dragon from the Persians. Initially the 'draco' was used as a standard by the Roman army but over time it was adopted by the Welsh people as their national flag. It is possibly the oldest national flag in use today.

This group of photos show arriving at one of Kevin's customers premises after collecting their Doosan 225 excavator from a site in Chester. The operator standing by the machine is its regular driver, Eric. He will retire in a couple of weeks after 49 yrs service with this company. He keeps his machine immaculate. the photos show Kevin's trailer with the hydraulic ramps lowered, and Eric tracking off his machine.

The far (Right and Left Photos) show Kevin's truck hooked up to his Low Loader for 2 different trips. (Centre Photo) The bike is his pride and joy. He refers to it as his mistress, Hayley the Harley, simply awesome to get out on it here as they have some fantastic biking roads, and is the best way to chill out on the week-ends.

Kevin's family is from this area and run 3 trucks here in North Wales out of a village called Rhosesmor (row-ses-more) They run two 8 wheelers and one artic all on tipping work out of several quarries in the area.
