TOM BLACKWELL visits the

ATHS Virginia-Carolina Foothills Chapter for their 6th annual antique Truck & Tractor Show. It was held at the Iredell county fair grounds, Troutman, North Carolina, USA, July 28, 2007.

  Tom's recent entry into some local antique truck shows has won awards for his restored Mack Truck Cement Mixer. Hopefully in the future, he can display  it at an ATHS show.

This restored Scammell tractor is a 1980 Crusader. The Scammell name was under the Leyland banner, and when the truck industry was going through a bad time in the 1970’s and early 80’s and following the acquisition of Leyland by DAF Trucks in 1987 the Scammell plant closed in 1988.

A SPECTATORS DESCRIPTION OF THE SHOW

As you can see the weather was absolutely beautiful the whole time we were there. I like this show because it's sort of compact; if you picture a circle track, it's like they had trucks around the outside and more around the inside, and some in the infield. You could walk one lap around, then through the middle to catch anything you might have missed, and you've seen everything. My opinion is it's not as big as Winchester (my favorite) but bigger and better than Greensboro. The Scammell and the Mack bus were vehicles I'd never seen before, and while Greensboro seemed to feature the Corbitts there was a lot of H-model Mack's at Troutman. A very enjoyable trip overall, well worth going to.

1956 FORD Big Job C 800

In the Eastern part of the country some provinces in Canada, and some states in the USA, had length limits of 45 or 50 feet. These cab over models turned tighter and hauled longer trailers legaly.

(Bottom row, above), This old Mack has a Tulsa winch mounted behind cab. Diesel Gypsy had the same type winch in 1955, and it would drag with all kinds of power. It was strong enough to pull a loaded pipe trailer out of the swamp while pulling 2 anchor trees out by the roots at the same time.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE ATHS CHAPTERS;

Local ATHS chapters hold regular meetings offering an exchange of information on truck history and restoration, sponsor truck shows, and hold special fundraisers and events.

ATHS currently has nearly 100 chapters in the U.S., five in Canada and one in Australia.
