TOM LEADBEATER of CANADA

Tom is an Owner/Operator with Liquid Cargo Lines, out of Clarkson (Mississauga), Ontario, Canada.

He has millions of miles under his belt, and is the type of operator that you give a load to and then forget it. It gets done, no fuss, no muss, and with finesse. It is hard to find dedicated operators like Tom in this day and age.

On this particular trip, Tom is hauling a load of EMULSIFIER for the EXPLOSIVES plant at the Elk River Mining Company's open pit coal mine, located in the CROWSENEST PASS, at Sparwood, British Columbia, Canada. Once in the Sparwood area, how do I get to the mine site? Just follow the mountain goats, --- straight up.

The unloading location was just under the 7,000 foot altitude overlooking the pit. Getting there was not that big a problem for Tom's truck, which is equipped with a 500 Cummins ISX engine, turning an 18 speed double overdrive tranny. Tom and his truck are capable of climbing the highest mountain roads to make a delivery. The snow on the job site was on the first day of summer.

TOM BLACKWELL of the USA

Tom is a native of Virginia, and is currently hauling a flat deck. His tractor is a beautifully coloured 2006 Peterbuilt. Powered by a 475 Cat coupled to an 18 spd. tranny, he has no problem attacking any hills that may get in his way.

Tom (whose handle is Moonshiner) has been driving for 27 years now and is looking forward to the next 1/4 century. He has had the bug for sometime to get an old truck and restore it to original. A man has to have a diversion of some sort to maintain his sanity in this business. He chose something very unique and rare to work on;

A 1965 B-53 MACK CONCRETE MIXER.

How many concrete mixers have you seen restored?

Before  completion

-----

On display at the car show in TOGA, Virginia, August, 2006

Tom had planned to take the mixer to the ATHS truck show in Winchester, Va. He had to cancel out when he discovered that the mixer was too big and slow to drive that far, and after taking measurements found that the height clearance was too high on the lowboy (float) trailer for that route. A disappointment, but will know next time what to expect.

Despite his trucks transporting problem, Tom did make it to the show as a spectator. He had excellent weather and took a great amount of photos at the event. Click on title below and see the antique truck show for yourself.

DON ADAMS, of CANADA

Don hauls for LEXICAN ROOFING in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. They are roofing suppliers, and he delivers to job sites anywhere within the province.

At present Don drives a 2005 Western star equipped with a 100' Hiab boom crane mounted on the tractor. The two together weigh in at 32,000 lbs, bobtailed, and with the trailer hooked up, it scales out at 53,000 lbs empty.

He delivers roofing supplies for the constructing or refurbishing of flat roofs, such as schools or industrial buildings. When he delivers his load, it's directly from the plant to the actual job site up onto the roof, using his self contained crane. The rig is also equipped with hydraulic outriggers for lifting stability for those long reaches.

PAT DALEY, of AUSTRALIA

Pat Daley lives in Albury-Wodonga which is on the Victorian and New South Wales border. Pat has been driving tanker for BP Australia, the past 15 years. He hauls fuel to various farms and retail sites.

At present he is driving this Model 401 Kenworth straight truck & quad axle dog (pup-trailer with dolly) The C-12 Cat engine does the job nicely. This set up works really well for the wide range of delivery points. It is a rare event that he has

to drop the dog (pup trailer) for it is very flexible getting in and out of awkward delivery locations, such as outback service stations and area farms.

Delivering in a radius of 200 km from town, he could be delivering in the dusty bush country in the morning and up in the mountain snow line by afternoon. Pat has plenty of flexibility, driving "B" doubles (B-trains) Roadtrains as well as most combinations.

EDWIN SCHOLTENS of the NETHERLANDS

Edwin has been a truck driver for almost 22 years. Most of the time he hauls containers.

On special occasions he is called upon to haul first class shows all over Europe. Hauling for "Disney on Ice", and the "Riverdance" troupe, was a great experience. A job that is interesting as well as enjoyable, and at the same time, a break from the routine.
