ROBERT WILLIAMSON, of CANADA.
![]() |
Bob took an early retirement from Imperial Oil of Canada, after 27 years of service. He hauled for the Lubricant division, and delivered product to bulk plants throughout the Ontario North country. |
![]() |
After laying around for an extended period, he found out that it was too early to retire. Restlessness took over, and he signed up for an extended stint working for SUNOVA, hauling a pressure vessel, out of SARNIA, ONTARIO. When the final age of retirement hit, he moved to the favoured North country away from the congestion, and pollution of the big cities.

DEAN BELL of NEW ZEALAND
The importance of the straight truck should never be underestimated, as Dean Bell so demonstrates. Loading up and delivering building materials and prefabs, he takes off for destinations that no tractor trailer should ever attempt. We must remember that at times, it takes the smaller trucks to make up loads, or deliver for the large trucks. They have to compliment each other.

Dean, working out of Nelson on the South Island, finds that some locations present a problem unloading. Space can be pretty tricky at times, such as, maneuvering the boom around power lines without electrocution, or damaging the load and it's close surroundings. |
|
He was On his way to Mahau Sound in the Marlborough Sounds to deliver a starter pack for a new house.

This is his 1995 Isuzu FVR 900. 220 hp with a 9 speed Road Ranger. Can you see it? |

(Left photo) Can you find the needle (truck) in this haystack. Dean delivers no matter where it is, and then self unloads. (Right photo) is ZOOMED in.

Deans newly assigned truck is a 1999 Scania 124G, 360 h.p. with HIAB 300. In the photos, he is carrying a portable building, from Nelson to Westport. The overhanging rock in the photo is called Hawks Crag. It was cut by hand with pick and shovel (and a little T.N.T). Flood waters have been about the same height as the windscreen on the truck. The river is about 20 metres below road level. It is located in the lower Buller Gorge. The (centre) photo is a livestock truck that he was following on the way back up the Buller Gorge. New Zealand is famous for its scenic roadways and countryside. By the way, do not try passing in this area.

BRIAN DAVIDSON (USA) --- STATIONED IN GERMANY
Brian is an x-service man contracted out to the US ARMY. he has been working in Germany for the past 4 years. A float driver, that hauls between the American bases in Europe, covering 200 to 400 miles a day. (320 to 640 km) It could be a front end loader, or a load of thunder shacks. Whatever they need moved, gets moved.

Hailing from San Diego, California, USA, Brian is getting his world traveling in at his company's expense. His rig is a 1992 (M915 ARMY) Freightliner day cab. It's equipped with a series 60, Detroit Diesel, rated at 400 hp. It's hard to believe, but the transmission is a 4 speed Allison automatic. 4 speed you say? Yes sir, a 4 speed (spoil the driver) transmission.
Brian is usually hooked up to a lowboy float most of the time, but he gets to haul a flat deck the odd trip. The one thing that he does not get to do, is to enter into a "Truck Show & Shine Contest".

LUIZ CARLOS of JUIZ DE FORA, BRAZIL
(160 km North of Rio De Janeiro)
![]() |
|
![]() |
Luiz, pictured with his son, (above centre photo) has travelled long haul for 10 years before settling down in the shop to maintain his small fleet of trucks. Most of his family are Owner/Operator truckers. His long hauls have taken him from the North and Northeast of Brazil down to the South end of the country. AMAZONAS, RONDONIA, PARÁ, MARANHÃO, CEARÁ, PERNAMBUCO, BAHIA, ETC... Were regular destinations. Dropping one load and grabbing another nearby, would keep him on the move for 30 to 40 days, and thousands of km, before making it home. Working with a flat deck trailer, he would load cement, iron, wood, foods, coal, sugar, salt, coffee, etc.

Luiz's father is now a retired truck driver. His brother is an Owner/Operator, pulling a refrigerated trailer with a 1996 SCANIA tractor.

(Left Photo) is of the SCANIA that Luiz just added to his fleet. (Right Photo) is
Marcio, (an owner/operator friend) with Jose Romulo and Anna Carolina.
Luiz now has 4 SCANIA tractors, along
with 4 refrigerated trailers. His drivers,
travel mostly South to SÃO PAULO, RIO DE JANEIRO, CURITIBA, UBERLANDIA, PORTO ALEGRE,
ETC. He runs the odd trip himself, just to break the routine. Hauling
loads of chicken, pork, meat, margarine, fish, etc., keeps them hopping.

ROGER GREEN of the UK
![]() |
Roger works out of 2 quarries in the Worcestershire area, and they are about 10 miles (16 km) apart. Most of his work consists of delivering both sand, and gravel to tarmac, and concrete producing plants in Worcestershire and Gloustershire.
|
![]() |
The blue Scania up on the ramps, is the truck Roger had previous to driving the tarmac Scania. He was running out of a stone quarry in Shropshire, and delivered lime stone aggregate to various building sites throughout the midlands.
![]() |
The vehicle, (Left Photo) parked in the field on ramps, is delivering agricultural lime for spreading on farmers fields. It takes about an hour and a half to discharge 20 tons of product, as it has to be tipped into the spreader that is being towed behind a tractor. It generally takes about 7 tips to empty out.
|

The 2 bulk trailer semis (Upper Right Photo) generally haul sugar beet from farms, to the beet factory during the period from October, to the end of February. The sugar factory is situated in Telford Shropshire, and the farms are spread out over the midlands. When idled from this work, they do a mix of grain hauls from farms to mills all over the country, and supplement with any general haulage as needed.

Roger in his spare time likes to take out his pent up work frustrations on the track. He has a lot of energy to dispose of, and this is his way of having fun and rejuvenating himself at the same time. Trucking today is a stressful occupation. |
