--- Present Situation of the Korea Trucking Industry ---



Because of the high oil prices the Korean Truck industry is having a hard time. Today, the price of diesel is more than a dollar a litre.

The oil fee is 45% of the earn fee.

There are many difficulties because of the high oil prices.

90% of truck drivers own their own truck in Korea. They work for a transportation company, but they own their trucks.

Every month they pay their transportation company for their license.

Also they pay a 10% transportation fee for introducing a cargo agency.

There are no specific parking lots for trucks.

So every truck driver has to fend for themselves, usually they park in business parking lots. But there are really not enough parking lots, so sometimes they just park on the road.

Sometimes they have to pay a 50 dollar fine.

Korea is very strict about overload driving. It is illegal if you load over 40 ton of gross weight.

And also you should not over the axle weight 10 ton. This is illegal, so when the police man find out, you will get a ticket. If you have other records, then the fine is different. If you have a lot of fines then the maximum amount you will have to pay is a 7,000 dollar fine, and also you can be accused for your criminal action. Therefore, when people overload their cargo, they drive on country roads or drive at night or early in the morning. In addition, you should not load over 4.2 meter of height, if you need to, you should go get a permit from the district office.

The driving license system in Korea is as follows.
 

There are two kinds of driving license when you get a driving license for the first time.

There is a commercial drivers license and a regular drivers license.

You can drive a small car, an 11 ton commercial truck, and a big car with up to 15 passengers with a commercial driverís license.

You can only drive a personal car with a regular driverís license.

After one year of driving experience, you can take a big truck driverís license test; you can drive a big bus, big trucks and special cars, commercial car and almost all cars with that license.



However, you need a different driverís license to drive a tractor trailer.

The test is not that difficult, so most people usually pass the test easily. .

To drive cargo truck in Korea, you need two licenses.

First, it is cargo car driverís license, and second, it is tractor trailer drivers license or big truck drivers license.

The high way system in Korea is as complicated as a spiderís web.

The road system allows you to go anywhere in Korea within 5 hours.

The distance from Pusan to Seoul is 400 km.

Usually people drive one night and two days. The round-trip moving fee is an average of $80.

There are many transportation businesses in Korea. You canít even count them. The biggest company is Dae-han transportation. They have about 3,500 transportations and they do all of the government business by themselves.

The next biggest company is Sebang, Korea, Dongbang, Gukbo, Yuseong companies.

Han-jin Company is famous for marine and air transportation, but they are not famous for road transportation.

Korea doesnít have many resources. So we usually import resources and process them, and afterwards we export the products. Korea is one of the top 10 traders in the world, and now Pusan port is in the top 5 so it is not good as before. This is because of Chinaís rapid development.

Koreans mostly drive Hyundai and Daewoo trucks.

But now Scania and Volvo are charging the truck market.

Scania is number one amongst imported cars, and next is Volvo trucks.

The parts for Scania and Volvo trucks are very expensive.

The rear mirror assembly in the passenger seat is 720 dollar. From this price you might be able to guess how expensive other parts are.

Scania have a competitive power in warranty service and the price of assembly.

The next, Koreanís favourite truck is Mercedes.

The next favourite is Volvo and Scania. I got this data from my research in my other website.

The marketing of Mercedes is very low, and their truck service and assembly supply is not good.

The Iveco truck is the least popular; they are struggling in the market right now.

However, these days, because of the bad economy, the whole truck market has a hard time.



Koreaís internet diffusion rate is number one in the world.

Most Koreans canít imagine the world without the internet.

Koreans use the internet for every thing such as paying and receiving cell phone bills, telephone bills, wages, insurance payments, banking, and for official work.



The Japanese truck business is in almost the same situation as Korea.

The type of transportation and transportation culture is similar to Korea.

But the Internet is not as well developed in Japan.

Most people donít use the internet, and they donít feel familiar to strangers.

From Korea, it takes to 3 hours to go to Japan by ship. It is very close. The wage of Japanese truck driversí is 4,000 dollar. It is average money with other business wages.

The success of the Korean transportation business depends on the oil prices.

An 8-cylinder engine uses too much fuel. So people like 6- cylinder engines. That is the reason why the imported trucks such as Volvo, Scania, and Mercedes are so popular in Korea.



The Mercedes engine is very good. The 69 ton tractor trailer of Ssangyong Company used a Mercedes engine.

It was manufactured and sold from 1995 to 1997, even thought you drove 1,000,000 Kilometres, you didnít have to get bearing service, it means its engine was so good. For this reason, many people love Mercedes.



Samsung doesnít manufacture big trucks anymore.

They have made the Samsung truck by cooperating with Mitsubishi, and they used the Hino engine.

Samsung is now managed by Renault, of France, and they only manufacture small cars.



Asian Car doesnít manufacture big cars, either.

But they manufacture and supply the army with trucks.

They donít manufacture civilian trucks and only manufacture small car, also they have merged with Hyundai.

Daewoo manufactures small car under the GM brand.

Tata Group undertook the big car business, and their first car was the Novus. They used Cummins engine, so it was popular in the market. But compared to European cars, it is a rough ride.

American trucks are very long so they are not proper for Korean roads.

For this reason it is really hard to find American trucks in Korea.

A few years ago, Korea imported American trucks a lot, so some were driven in Korea, but the truckers didnít receive permission to use that engine type, so they are still on trial.

There are many tractor trailer manufacturing companies in Korea. Their technical skill is also very superior, even though the Korean economy is not good, they still export a lot.

The price of a high level Korean platform trailer is 24,000 dollars.

The price of Korean truck is as follow.

Hyundaiís new Powertech full option is $80,000.

Daewooís tractor is the same price.

The price of used tractor trailer in Korea goes down at an average of 12,000 dollars a year.

Korean Dae woo tractor trailers are very good.
